Started in 2011 by star sommelier Raj Par from the Michael Mina Group and Jasmine Hirsch of Hirsch Vineyards, In Pursuit of Balance seeks to honor and recognize the growing group of California Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producers committed to balance, non-manipulation in the cellar, and the promotion of the fundamental varietal characteristics which make pinot noir and chardonnay great – subtlety, poise and the expression of terroir.
Please join us to taste five producers committed to the Pursuit of Balance.
2010 Peay Vineyards Cep Chardonnay, Sonoma Coast (500 cases produced) Vanessa Wong, formerly the winemaker at Peter Michael and Hirsch owns this winery with her husband Nick Peay and his brother Andy. Elegance. Balance. Finesse
“Peay is one of the most intriguing young wineries in Sonoma!” Wine Advocate 2012
2011 Ojai Rose, Ventura County Mourvedre (50%) from Vogelzang Vineyard in Santa Ynez, Grenache (25%) from Rich Vineyard in Ojai and Syrah (25%) from Roll Ranch in Ojai. The flavors are relatively plush, but kept in balance by a refreshing crispness.
“The best Ojai wines – and there are many that vie for that label – are gorgeous, transparent to site and highly expressive. As always, the style at Ojai is fairly non-interventionalist.” Wine Advocate 2012
2009 Copain Tous Ensemble, Mendocino County-Anderson Valley Wells Gutherie creates wines that are firmly rooted in California, yet with the sensibilities of the European wines that so moved him. He is as committed to crafting these elegant, nuanced wines as he is to building a legacy, that will be passed down to his daughters in the great tradition of European winemakers whose estates have been in the same family for generations.
“This set of wines from Copain and proprietor Wells Guthrie was among the most exciting I tasted from Sonoma this year! Wine Advocate 2012
2011 Samsara Rita’s Crown Vineyard, Central Coast-Santa Rita Hills Samsara is the Sanskrit word for eternal cycles of life. The resulting wine is an interpretation of the tenuous balance between the power of nature and elements beyond our control, and the human desire to reach perfection.
“Samsara is without question one of the hottest boutique wineries in California’s Central Coast. Proprietor Chad Melville splits his time between Samsara and his family’s Melville estate.” Wine Advocate 2012
2009 Drew McDougal Ranch Vineyard, Sonoma Coast (183 cases produced) Top 100 Winery of the Year, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
“Fleshy and smooth on entry, then tangy and incisive in the mid-palate, offering bright red and dark berry flavors and notes of violet and licorice pastille. Finishes on a sweet note of black raspberry, with silky tannins.” 92 points Steve Tanzer
